Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) 2026: every occupation an employer can sponsor

Reviewed 16 Oct 2026

Can your business sponsor this occupation?

The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) names the 456 occupations an employer can sponsor on a Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa in the Core Skills stream. The same 456 occupations can be nominated for permanent residence in the Direct Entry stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa.

Being on the list is the first test, not the last. 34 occupations carry a caveat (a condition that rules out some positions or businesses), and 24 need a skills assessment before the worker applies. Find your occupation below, then read its caveat and skills-assessment columns.

Check the caveat column before you advertise. A business that turns over less than AUD 1 million, or has fewer than 5 staff, cannot sponsor an accountant, recruitment consultant or management consultant on a 482. A chef cannot be sponsored into a cafe, coffee shop or fast-food outlet.

The list does not apply to the 482 Specialist Skills stream (jobs paying AUD 146,576 or more), to a labour agreement position, or to a 186 nomination of a worker who has already worked for you on a 482 for 2 years. Those routes are explained after the table.

Find your occupation

Search by occupation or ANZSCO code (the six-digit official job code), or filter by group, assessing authority, caveat or skills assessment. The table lists all 456 occupations in code order, as the legal instrument does. Tap a caveat, or a Yes in the skills-assessment column, to read the exact condition.

This page is general information, checked against the registered instruments on the date shown further down this page. It is not legal advice about your business or a particular nomination. Before you advertise or lodge, have the occupation, the caveats and the salary checked for your own position.

What do the caveats mean for your business?

A caveat is a condition written into the occupation list. If it describes your position or your business, the occupation does not apply to that position, and the nomination is refused even though the occupation is listed. The same 16 caveats apply to a 482 Core Skills nomination and a 186 Direct Entry nomination.

  1. Caveat 1, salary under AUD 180,001 — You cannot sponsor a Chief Executive or Corporate General Manager unless the job pays at least AUD 180,001 a year, or it is an intra-company transfer covered by a trade agreement.
  2. Caveat 2, clerical work — An accountant or human resource adviser cannot be sponsored into a position that is really clerical, bookkeeping or accounts-clerk work.
  3. Caveat 3, factory mass production — A chef or cook position that involves mass production in a factory setting is excluded.
  4. Caveat 4, fast food or limited-service venue — A chef or cook cannot be sponsored into a fast-food or takeaway outlet, a fast-casual restaurant, a coffee shop or mall cafe, a limited-service pizza restaurant, or a bar that serves limited food.
  5. Caveat 5, low-skilled tasks — For farmers, hotel or motel managers and workplace relations advisers, the position is excluded if the work is mostly low-skilled tasks. The instrument gives picking or packing fruit, feeding livestock and driving trucks as examples.
  6. Caveat 6, front-line retail or sales — Applies to sales and marketing managers, supply and distribution managers, marketing specialists, technical sales representatives and retail buyers. The position is excluded if it is front-line retail, mostly transactional client contact, selling courses to students, or a call centre role needing no real technical product knowledge.
  7. Caveat 7, massage setting — A massage therapist position must be full-time, in a therapeutic setting, not relaxation massage and not in a retail setting.
  8. Caveat 8, single-service or non-commercial site — Written into the instrument, but no listed occupation currently carries it.
  9. Caveat 9, phone and device repairs — A mechanical engineering technician cannot be sponsored into retail repair of mobile phones or small consumer devices.
  10. Caveat 10, mass-production baking — A baker or pastrycook position is excluded where the food is mass-produced, made in a franchise or factory setting, made for distribution elsewhere, or mostly pre-prepared.
  11. Caveat 11, turnover under AUD 1 million — If your business turns over less than AUD 1 million a year, you cannot sponsor an accountant (general, management or taxation), recruitment consultant, management consultant or marketing specialist.
  12. Caveat 12, turnover under AUD 1 million or fewer than 5 staff — Sales and marketing managers, corporate services managers and supply and distribution managers are excluded for a business under either limit, unless the position is an intra-company transfer covered by a trade agreement.
  13. Caveat 13, fewer than 5 staff — Accountants, recruitment consultants and management consultants cannot be sponsored by a business with fewer than 5 employees.
  14. Caveat 14, trade-agreement positions only — Private tutors and teachers nec, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and the wushu martial arts coach or yoga instructor role can be sponsored only where an international trade obligation provides for the position.
  15. Caveat 15, salary under AUD 120,000 — A gas or petroleum operator must be paid at least AUD 120,000 a year.
  16. Caveat 16, brothel keeper — Excluded under Hospitality, Retail and Service Managers nec.

Caveat 11 and caveat 13 are tested on the sponsoring business, not the job. Caveats 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 15 are tested on the position itself, so the same business can sponsor an accountant into one role and be refused on another.

Which ANZSCO version does Home Affairs use?

Both instruments fix ANZSCO (the official job classification published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics) at the version in force on 23 November 2022. Codes from later ABS updates do not apply to a 482 or 186 nomination until the instruments are changed.

For a 482 nomination, the visa officer checks that the occupation and code are on the list and that no caveat describes the position. For a 186 Direct Entry nomination, the list in force on the day you lodge applies. The worker also needs a skills assessment from the authority in the table, unless exempt.

A 186 Temporary Residence Transition nomination does not use this list. The occupation must be in ANZSCO and be the same occupation the worker’s 482 was granted for. For nominations lodged since 7 December 2024 there is no longer a test that it sits in the same four-digit group.

Where a code changed between ANZSCO versions, Home Affairs policy is to compare the tasks of the position with the tasks of the occupation. A worker whose 457 or 482 was nominated under a 2013 code should have the nomination checked before the 186 is lodged.

When does the list change?

The 482 list is the Migration (Specification of Occupations—Subclass 482 Visa) Instrument 2024 (LIN 24/089), Compilation No. 3, in force from 7 November 2025. The 186 list is the Migration (Specification of Occupations and Relevant Assessing Authorities—Subclass 186 Visa) Instrument 2024 (LIN 24/093), Compilation No. 4, in force from 28 March 2026.

The 482 skills-assessment rule is the Migration (IMMI 18/039: Mandatory Skills Assessment—Subclass 482 Visa) Instrument 2018, Compilation No. 2, in force from 14 December 2024. The Minister can change any of the three at any time. We check this table against the registered instruments each Thursday; it was last checked on 15 October 2026.

Under each instrument’s application rules, a nomination is assessed against the list as it stood when the nomination was made. If you have advertised but not yet lodged, check the list again on the day you lodge.

What if the occupation is not on the list?

If the job pays at least AUD 146,576 a year, the Specialist Skills stream of the 482 visa lets you nominate most occupations without this list. Trades workers, machinery operators and drivers, and labourers (ANZSCO major groups 3, 7 and 8) are excluded from that stream.

The salary must still meet the market rate for an equivalent Australian worker, and the labour market testing, sponsorship and nomination rules are the same as for the Core Skills stream. Our 482 visa requirements guide sets them out.

A business with its own labour agreement, an industry labour agreement, or a position in a region covered by a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) can sponsor the occupations named in that agreement, with the salary, age or English concessions it allows. The agreement replaces this list for those positions.

Negotiating a company-specific agreement takes months and needs evidence of the shortage. A DAMA is faster where your region has one, because the terms are already set. Ask us which, if either, fits the role before you advertise.

If the worker has held a 482 with your business and worked full-time in the nominated occupation for at least 2 of the last 3 years, the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream does not use this list. The occupation must be in ANZSCO and be the same occupation the 482 was granted for.

Our 482 to permanent residence guide covers the two-year count, including time with more than one sponsor.

The visa officer checks that the tasks of your position correspond to the tasks ANZSCO lists for the nominated occupation. A role that mostly matches a listed occupation can be nominated under that code, provided the duty statement is honest and the position is genuine.

A cook described as a chef, or a bookkeeper described as an accountant, invites refusal: the first on genuineness, the second under caveat 2 as well. Where the fit is partial, we map the duties against the ANZSCO task list before the job is advertised, and tell you if the answer is no.

FAQ

Yes. The Core Skills Occupation List for the 482 Core Skills stream and the list for the 186 Direct Entry stream contain the same 456 occupations, with the same ANZSCO codes and the same 16 caveats.

The 186 instrument adds one thing: the assessing authority for each occupation, which the worker uses for the skills assessment the Direct Entry stream requires. The 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream does not use either list.

For 24 of the 456 occupations, the worker must have applied for a skills assessment before lodging the 482 visa application, or the application is invalid.

For 23 trades (including chef, cook, electrician, carpenter and motor mechanic) the rule applies only to holders of the passports listed against that trade, and the assessing body is Trades Recognition Australia. For program or project administrator it applies to every applicant, assessed by VETASSESS.

Exemptions cover a worker already on a 457 or 482 and working in Australia in the same occupation, and an intra-company transfer from an established overseas business.

A worker is also exempt if the trade qualification was gained in Australia or in a country not on that trade’s list, if they hold the licence or registration the occupation requires, or if they have met the standards of the TRA offshore skills program.

A program or project administrator is exempt only with a matching qualification, earnings of at least AUD 180,000 and an accredited sponsor.

No. For every Core Skills occupation the employer must pay at least AUD 79,423 a year, or the market rate for an equivalent Australian worker if that is higher.

Two caveats add their own floors: a Chief Executive or Corporate General Manager must be paid at least AUD 180,001, and a gas or petroleum operator at least AUD 120,000. The AUD 79,423 figure applies to nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027 and is indexed each 1 July.

Under the instruments’ application rules, a nomination is assessed against the list as it stood on the day it was made. An occupation removed later does not affect a nomination already lodged.

If you have advertised the job but not yet lodged the nomination, check the list again on the day you lodge, because the Minister can amend it at any time. We check this page against the registered instruments every Thursday.
