Big Changes to English Test Rules for the 482 Visa (Effective 13 September 2025)

If you’re applying for a Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa, you need to understand the updated 482 visa English test requirements 2025, which take effect from 13 September. The Australian Government has updated the list of approved English test providers, the required test scores, and even the way test results can be used.
These changes apply only to applications in the Specialist Skills and Core Skills streams lodged on or after 13 September 2025.
What Has Changed?
1. New Approved 482 Visa Test Providers
In addition to well-known providers such as IELTS and PTE Academic, the Department of Home Affairs has now recognised three new English tests:
CELPIP General (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
LANGUAGECERT Academic
Michigan English Test (MET)
The Cambridge English test has also been rebranded from Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) to C1 Advanced.
2- Updated Minimum English Test Scores for the 482 Visa
Alongside new test providers, the Australian Government has also revised the minimum English test scores for the 482 visa. The required score depends on when your test was taken — before or after 13 September 2025.

3. Clarification for IELTS
The rules now clearly distinguish between IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic, confirming that both versions are acceptable for 482 visa purposes.
4. Re-sitting Individual Components
Previously, applicants had to achieve all scores in a single attempt. Under the new rules, you can now re-sit one component of your test if needed.
This means:
IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) and
MET Single Skill Retake (SSR)
are now allowed for English tests taken on or after 13 September 2025.
If you sat your English test before 13 September 2025, you must still meet the required scores in one sitting.
5. 482 Visa Test Validity
The validity of English test results remains three years from your first sitting. If you re-sit one component, the three-year countdown still starts from your original test date.

If your test result is close to three years old: Consider re-sitting under the new system so you don’t risk your result expiring during your visa application process.
